Key Changes and Specifications


2013–2019: First Generation

  • Overview: The e-Up! debuted in 2013 as Volkswagen’s first production EV, based on the petrol-powered Up! city car.
  • Motor: Equipped with a permanent magnet synchronous motor producing 60 kW (82 hp) and 210 Nm of torque.
  • Battery: Featured a lithium-ion battery with a gross capacity of 18.7 kWh (usable capacity approx. 16.4 kWh).
  • Range: Official NEDC range was up to 160 km (99 miles).
  • Charging: AC charging only, up to 3.6 kW; no CCS fast charging support.
  • Performance: 0–100 km/h in 12.4 seconds, top speed 130 km/h.

2020–2025: Major Battery Upgrade

  • Overview: In 2020, the e-Up! received a significant technical upgrade while retaining its compact design.
  • Motor: Slightly revised motor output of 61 kW (83 hp) and 212 Nm of torque.
  • Battery: New lithium-ion pack with a gross capacity of 36.8 kWh (usable approx. 32.3 kWh), nearly double the previous version.
  • Range: WLTP range increased to up to 260 km (162 miles), depending on driving conditions.
  • Charging: Added CCS DC fast charging up to 40 kW (0–80% in ~60 minutes); AC charging up to 7.2 kW.
  • Efficiency: Average consumption around 12.9 kWh/100 km.
  • Additional Features: Multiple drive modes, regenerative braking levels, improved climate control and infotainment.

Production Status

  • End Date: While still available in select markets, the e-Up! is gradually being phased out in favor of MEB-based models like the ID.2all.
