First Generation (2021–Present)

2021: Global Launch

  • Debut: The Audi Q4 e-tron and its Sportback variant were officially presented in April 2021. They are built on the Volkswagen Group’s modular electric drive matrix (MEB) platform.
  • Initial Models & Motors:
    • Q4 35 e-tron: Single-motor, rear-wheel drive. Power: 125 kW (170 PS / 168 hp). Torque: 310 Nm (229 lb-ft).
    • Q4 40 e-tron: Single-motor, rear-wheel drive. Power: 150 kW (204 PS / 201 hp). Torque: 310 Nm (229 lb-ft).
    • Q4 50 e-tron quattro: Dual-motor, all-wheel drive. Total system power: 220 kW (299 PS / 295 hp). Torque: 460 Nm (339 lb-ft).
  • Battery & Range:
    • Q4 35 e-tron: 55 kWh gross battery capacity (51.5 kWh usable). WLTP range up to 341 km (212 miles).
    • Q4 40 e-tron & 50 e-tron quattro: 82 kWh gross battery capacity (76.6 kWh usable). WLTP range up to 520 km (323 miles) for the 40 model and 488 km (303 miles) for the 50 quattro model.
  • Charging:
    • Q4 35 e-tron: DC fast charging at up to 100 kW.
    • Q4 40 & 50 e-tron: DC fast charging at up to 125 kW.

2023: Technical Update

  • Model Name Change: The model naming was adjusted, with the Q4 45 e-tron quattro replacing the Q4 50 e-tron quattro in many markets, but with a slight performance difference.
  • Key Technical Changes:
    • Q4 45 e-tron quattro: Introduced a more powerful all-wheel drive version with a total output of 195 kW (265 PS / 261 hp) and 425 Nm (313 lb-ft).
    • Increased Charging Speed: The DC fast charging rate for all models with the larger 82 kWh battery was increased to 135 kW.
    • Software Improvements: The vehicle received over-the-air (OTA) updates to its software, improving charging performance and energy management.

2025: Major Upgrade (MY2025)

  • Motor Upgrade: A new, more efficient permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PSM) was introduced for the rear axle. This new motor replaces the previously used asynchronous motor on the 40 and 50 quattro models.
    • This change improves both efficiency and power delivery.
    • The Q4 45 e-tron quattro with the new motor has a total output of 210 kW (286 PS / 282 hp).
  • Increased Charging Power: DC charging power for the 82 kWh battery models was increased to 175 kW, significantly reducing charging times.
  • Range Enhancement: The combination of the more efficient motor and software updates resulted in an improved WLTP range of up to 547 km (340 miles) for the Q4 40 e-tron.
  • Improved Suspension: The suspension was retuned for a more balanced and comfortable ride, addressing some feedback from earlier models.
