First Generation (2020–2022)

2020: Global Launch as Audi e-tron Sportback

  • Debut: The e-tron Sportback was introduced as a “coupé SUV” variant of the e-tron quattro, featuring a more sloped roofline for improved aerodynamics. It was built on the same modified MLB platform.
  • Models & Motors:
    • e-tron Sportback 55 quattro: Dual-motor AWD with a total system power of 300 kW (408 PS / 402 hp) and 664 Nm (489 lb-ft) of torque in boost mode.
    • e-tron Sportback 50 quattro (Introduced later): A more affordable version with a reduced total system power of 230 kW (313 PS / 308 hp) and 540 Nm (398 lb-ft) of torque.
  • Battery & Range:
    • e-tron Sportback 55 quattro: Featured a 95 kWh gross battery capacity (86.5 kWh usable). WLTP-estimated range was up to 446 km (277 miles).
    • e-tron Sportback 50 quattro: Featured a 71 kWh gross battery capacity (64.7 kWh usable). WLTP-estimated range was up to 347 km (216 miles).
  • Charging: DC fast charging at up to 150 kW for the 55 model and 120 kW for the 50 model.
  • Aerodynamics: Thanks to its sloping roofline, the e-tron Sportback had a lower drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.25 compared to the standard e-tron’s 0.28.

2020: Introduction of the Audi e-tron S Sportback

  • Technical Upgrade: A performance variant with a tri-motor setup (one on the front axle, two on the rear).
  • Performance: Boost mode delivered a total of 370 kW (503 PS / 496 hp) and 973 Nm (718 lb-ft) of torque.

Second Generation (2023–Present)

2023: Rebranding and Significant Technical Upgrade to Q8 e-tron Sportback

  • Rebranding: The model was officially renamed the Audi Q8 Sportback e-tron to align with Audi’s new electric vehicle naming strategy.
  • Key Technical Changes:
    • Increased Battery Capacity:
      • Q8 Sportback e-tron 50 quattro: Battery capacity was increased to 95 kWh gross (89 kWh usable).
      • Q8 Sportback e-tron 55 quattro: Battery capacity was increased to 114 kWh gross (106 kWh usable).
    • Improved Efficiency: The electric motors were revised. The rear axle motor now features an increased number of stator coils, from 12 to 14, to improve efficiency and reduce energy consumption.
    • Increased Charging Power: DC fast charging was increased to a maximum of 170 kW for the 55 and SQ8 models. This allows for a 10% to 80% charge in approximately 31 minutes.
    • Enhanced Range: Due to the larger batteries and more efficient motors, the official WLTP range was significantly increased:
      • Q8 Sportback e-tron 50 quattro: Up to 505 km (314 miles).
      • Q8 Sportback e-tron 55 quattro: Up to 600 km (373 miles).
    • Aerodynamics: New wheel spoilers and a refreshed design further improved the drag coefficient (Cd), bringing it down from 0.25 to 0.24.
