First Generation (2018–2022)

2018: Global Launch as Audi e-tron quattro

  • Debut: The Audi e-tron was launched as the brand’s first series-production electric SUV. It was built on a modified MLB platform.
  • Models & Motors:
    • e-tron 55 quattro: Equipped with two asynchronous electric motors (ASM), one on each axle, providing electric all-wheel drive. Total system power was 300 kW (408 PS / 402 hp) and 664 Nm (489 lb-ft) of torque in boost mode.
    • e-tron 50 quattro (Introduced later): A more affordable version with a reduced total system power of 230 kW (313 PS / 308 hp) and 540 Nm (398 lb-ft) of torque.
  • Battery & Range:
    • e-tron 55 quattro: Featured a 95 kWh gross battery capacity (86.5 kWh usable). WLTP-estimated range was up to 436 km (271 miles).
    • e-tron 50 quattro: Featured a 71 kWh gross battery capacity (64.7 kWh usable). WLTP-estimated range was up to 341 km (212 miles).
  • Charging:
    • e-tron 55 quattro: DC fast charging at up to 150 kW.
    • e-tron 50 quattro: DC fast charging at up to 120 kW.

2020: Introduction of the Audi e-tron S

  • Technical Upgrade: The e-tron S was introduced as a performance variant. It featured a tri-motor setup, a first for a production EV, with two motors on the rear axle and one on the front.
  • Performance: Boost mode delivered a total of 370 kW (503 PS / 496 hp) and 973 Nm (718 lb-ft) of torque.
  • Chassis: The S model featured a wider body, S-specific adaptive air suspension, and larger brakes.

Second Generation (2023–Present)

2023: Rebranding and Significant Technical Upgrade to Q8 e-tron

  • Rebranding: The model was officially renamed the Audi Q8 e-tron and Q8 Sportback e-tron to align with Audi’s new electric vehicle naming strategy.
  • Key Technical Changes:
    • Increased Battery Capacity:
      • Q8 e-tron 50 quattro: Battery capacity was increased to 95 kWh gross (89 kWh usable). This represented a 29% increase in capacity.
      • Q8 e-tron 55 quattro: Battery capacity was increased to 114 kWh gross (106 kWh usable).
    • Improved Efficiency: The electric motors were fundamentally revised. The rear axle motor was upgraded from 140 kW to 165 kW for better efficiency. The motor now has an increased number of stator coils, from 12 to 14, and a stronger magnetic field.
    • Increased Charging Power: DC fast charging was increased to a maximum of 170 kW.
    • Enhanced Range: Due to the larger batteries and more efficient motors, the official WLTP range was significantly increased:
      • Q8 e-tron 50 quattro: Up to 491 km (305 miles).
      • Q8 e-tron 55 quattro: Up to 600 km (373 miles) for the Sportback model.
    • Aerodynamics: The updated design, including new wheel spoilers, reduced the drag coefficient (Cd) from 0.28 to 0.27 on the SUV and from 0.26 to 0.24 on the Sportback model.
