Verdict: The Long Range AWD Juniper earns a 9.0 for Performance — dual motors, ~5.0 s 0–100 km/h, AWD traction — that part is genuinely hard to argue with. Range sits at 7.0 (586 km, above average). Where it loses ground: Efficiency at 6.0 — 15.9 kWh/100 km is what you'd expect from an AWD SUV, nothing more. Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD 2025 (Juniper): What the Spec Sheet Skips

Tesla publishes almost nothing about what's actually inside the Model Y Juniper. No cell supplier. No gross pack figure. No cargo depth. I went through owner forum threads, OBD diagnostic logs, hands-on measurement posts, and cold-weather test data. This block covers what you can't find on Tesla's configurator or in any press kit.

One important note upfront: the Juniper LR AWD is not a radically different car from the outgoing model on paper. The pack stays around 75 kWh usable. What changed is everything around it — heat pump, brakes, suspension, NVH. And the cell supplier question, which is more complicated than it looks.

1 Battery Pack — Gross Capacity, Cell Supplier, and the Chemistry Question Tesla Won't Answer EU · LG NMC · ~78.4 kWh US · Panasonic NCA · ~80 kWh

Tesla publishes 75 kWh usable and nothing else. The gross figure comes from OBD diagnostic logs and Chinese certification data. EU cars from Giga Shanghai use LG NMC 2170 cells — gross capacity around 78.4 kWh per certification documents. US cars from Fremont and Giga Texas continue with Panasonic NCA 2170, gross around 80–81 kWh. Both show 75 kWh usable on the touchscreen. The buffer and the charge curve differ between them.

The US pack chemistry debate ran for weeks in owner forums. The short answer: US Fremont and Texas-built Juniper LR AWDs use Panasonic NCA. NCA has higher energy density but calendar-ages faster than NMC — the inflection point where degradation noticeably accelerates is around 55% average SoC for Panasonic NCA, versus about 60% for LG NMC. One owner who keeps close tabs on battery health noted that after 18 months and 40,000 km (25,000 mi), his Shanghai-built LG car showed under 3% capacity loss. Forum threads from US owners on NCA packs are reporting similar early numbers — 2–4% in year one, then slowing.

How to identify your pack — 60 seconds: US: Got the $7,500 federal tax credit on purchase? You have Panasonic NCA. Check Controls → Software → Additional Vehicle Information — it may list battery chemistry directly. EU/Global: Check your CoC (Certificate of Conformity) — look for pack designation. LG NMC packs from Shanghai carry the "M50" cell designation in service documentation.
LG NMC long-term durability flag: An independent repair facility in Croatia published diagnostic data in late 2025 showing elevated internal resistance in LG NCM811 packs from Nanjing at higher mileage, compared to Panasonic units. Applies to EU Model Y LR AWD as well as EU Model 3 LR. Tesla warranty covers the pack for 8 years / 192,000 km (120,000 mi) with a minimum 70% capacity retention guarantee.

SuperManifold V2 — Not in Every Car

The Juniper introduces a revised heat pump system including the SuperManifold V2 with an updated LCCR filter for increased cooling capacity. Confirmed by Tesla's lead engineer: V2 is being rolled out gradually across factories and will not be in all early builds. If you took delivery in early 2025, check Controls → Software → Additional Vehicle Information for heat pump version. Early owners noticed the new compressor runs louder during initial cooling but settles quickly — and an older owner who compared his pre-Juniper directly to the new car said the cabin temperature in the Juniper drops noticeably faster on a hot day.

2 DC Charging — 250 kW Peak and What Actually Happens Session by Session EU · CCS2 US · NACS

Tesla officially states 250 kW maximum. From logged sessions, the LR AWD Juniper hits that peak between roughly 10–25% SoC on a warm, preconditioned pack. Average from 10–80% sits around 124 kW, giving you the 27-minute 10–80% window Tesla quotes. One owner's session from cold: he drove straight to a Supercharger without navigating to it first. Peak was 95 kW. He navigated to a second stop and arrived preconditioned — peak was 237 kW. Same car, same charger type, one setting difference.

Preconditioning only triggers via navigation. If you drive to a Supercharger without selecting it as your destination, the battery won't precondition. In cold weather (-5°C / 23°F) this adds 15–25 minutes to a session. Navigate every time.

3 Real-World Range — What Owners Are Logging vs. the WLTP / EPA Sticker EU · WLTP 600 km US · EPA 326 mi

The EU WLTP figure for the LR AWD Juniper reaches 600 km (373 mi) on 19" Gemini wheels. US EPA is 326 miles (525 km) on the same configuration. One fresh Juniper owner who charted his first three months logged a consistent implied range of 543 km (337 mi) — in line with what the car displays, and better than many owners expected from an AWD crossover. Highway at sustained speed is where the gap opens up.

Display shows EPA-based range in all markets. EU owners consistently report 492–520 km on the screen at 100% — not the 600 km WLTP figure. This is normal. Tesla uses EPA-equivalent calculation in the UI everywhere. Not degradation. Many owners in EU forums flag this right after delivery.

4 Cargo & Interior Dimensions — Measured, Not Estimated Boot · Frunk · Under-floor

Tesla quotes 854 L (30.2 cu ft) behind the rear seats, 2,138 L (75.5 cu ft) with seats folded, and 117 L (4.1 cu ft) in the frunk. Those top-line numbers don't answer the practical questions. Here's what owners have actually measured.

The 107 cm floor width between the wheel arches is the number that doesn't appear on any spec sheet — and it's the one that matters when loading bikes, strollers, or large boxes. The under-floor compartment is genuinely useful: two full grocery bags fit out of sight, or a folded pushchair, or all your charging cables so they're never in the way.

4 large suitcases won't fit upright with seats up. Two full-size rolling cases (70 cm / 27.6 in) fit lying flat in the boot with rear seats in place. Three is a squeeze. If you're travelling as a family with hold luggage, fold one rear seat — the asymmetric split (60/40) helps. Multiple owners with families report the same workaround.
Road bike: Front wheel off, frame diagonal — fits. Both wheels on: does not fit due to the 107 cm floor width. Cargo bikes and e-scooters are similar — measure your gear against that 107 cm before assuming it'll work.

5 Heat Pump, V2L, CarPlay and the Questions Nobody Answers EU · Juniper US · Juniper

Heat Pump — Standard, but Check Your Build Variant

Standard on all Juniper LR AWD builds in all markets. The Juniper gets the updated SuperManifold V2 system in later production — but early batches may have V1. Check Controls → Software → Additional Vehicle Information. In practice, owners report the heat pump makes a real difference at 0 to -10°C (32–14°F): 10–15% less energy used for cabin heat compared to older Model Y. Below -20°C (-4°F) the PTC resistive heater assists, and at extreme cold you'll feel it in range. One northern Finland owner tracked a local poll of 148 owners — 22 reported heat pump failures. Most were pre-Juniper builds. The V2 SuperManifold aims to address the sealing issues that caused failures, particularly the O-ring failures that were common in German-built units.

Battery Preconditioning

Activates automatically when you set a Supercharger as your navigation destination. Does nothing if you just drive there without routing. In winter this matters enormously — without it, arrival charging speed can be 80–100 kW instead of 230+ kW. Precondition also works for scheduled departure from home while plugged in. Doing this overnight in cold weather means a warm pack, full regen available immediately, and no range loss to warm-up on the road.

V2L / V2H — Not on LR AWD

The standard Juniper LR AWD does not support V2L (Vehicle to Load) or V2H (Vehicle to Home) bidirectional charging. The updated Model Y Performance was announced as the first Model Y to receive V2L and V2H capability. On the LR AWD, no OTA update path has been announced. If you need to power devices or your home from the car, the Performance trim is what you're looking for — or you wait and see if Tesla extends it.

Apple CarPlay / Android Auto

Not supported. Tesla's proprietary OS only — same as every other Tesla. The 15.4" touchscreen and the new 8" rear passenger screen both run Tesla's own software. No workaround exists. This comes up in forums after every new Tesla delivery cycle. The answer hasn't changed.

Rear Passenger Screen — New in Juniper

The 8" rear screen is standard on the LR AWD Juniper. Not available on the pre-refresh Model Y. Kids use it heavily. Adults on long trips mention streaming and climate control from the back seat. A few owners noted it adds a very slight delay to front touchscreen response when multiple passengers run high-bandwidth content simultaneously — minor but noticeable on loaded trips.

Brake-by-Wire — Unique to Juniper

The Juniper introduces a hydraulic-by-wire brake system — confirmed by Tesla's lead engineer Lars Moravy. The system uses an electric actuator on the booster side, allowing the brake pads to retract further when not in use (reducing passive friction) and improving regen recuperation. The pedal feel is notably improved over pre-Juniper — owners who've driven both mention the Juniper brake pedal feels more linear and predictable. The hydraulic system acts as redundant backup. This is a hardware change, not OTA-updatable after the fact.

The 64.1 mm centre bore is uncommon in the aftermarket — plan for hub rings on nearly any aftermarket wheel. Owners who've tried 22" report the ride gets genuinely unpleasant on rough roads. The factory offset of +45 is quite inboard — dropping to +35 gives a noticeably wider stance, but anything below +30 risks inner fender contact at full lock.
